Strain hunting for Bhutanese genetics was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that we will always cherish. It took us 10 years to save enough money to embark on a two month trip to this remote and exclusive destination.
The original landrace was collected in the wild in Bhutan’s remote Paro Valley, at 2,500 meters in the Himalayas, and brought back to Europe for breeding.
Today, Purple Paro Valley gives growers access to authentic Bhutanese genetics that are otherwise virtually impossible to find on the seed market.
Only two generations removed from its wild ancestors, this is a rare opportunity to grow a piece of living Himalayan cannabis history.
Purple Beauty
Around 75% of the plants develop the beautiful magenta and purple phenotype, with long internodes and an almost willowy appearance that transforms dramatically during flowering.
The remaining green phenotype stays shorter, finishes earlier and develops more compact buds. This diversity gives growers two different expressions to discover.
The purple plants need more room to stretch, especially in container cultivation. Late planting, pruning or LST keeps them easily manageable while preserving their distinctive Himalayan character.

Purple Paro Valley belongs outdoors and for this reason you won't find an indoor flowering time. These Himalayan genetics are adapted to natural sunlight and will not thrive under artificial light.
When the weather turns nasty, Purple Paro Valley shows what Himalayan genetics can do. Exceptional mold and cold resistance help the plants cope with conditions that can finish off less resilient varieties.
They are also nutrient-efficient and need remarkably little attention, making PPV especially attractive for guerrilla gardens or as a back-up strain alongside higher-yielding northern varieties (such as Mandala #1 and FNG).
In a truly miserable season, this may be the plant still standing when others have already given up.

Purple Paro Valley can take you through an exotic range of aromas, starting with the spicy green lime typical of the original Paro landrace. Then there is our favourite surprise, the “Candy Girl”, which smells just like sugary candy.
Dry buds can release sweet mint and hazelnut, some purple plants reveal notes of black tea, while the green phenotype leans toward lavender. The smoke finishes with a fresh minty aftertaste.
PPV hash oil has the fresh, sweet, balsamic aroma of Himalayan cedar wood and has tested at 27,5% THC.
The high is predominantly calming, relaxing, and can move into full couch-lock, making PPV a natural choice for winding down or drifting toward sleep in the evenings.

Purple Paro Valley was developed from an authentic landrace Sativa collected in the wild in Bhutan’s Paro Valley, at an altitude of 2,500 meters in the Himalayas. Bringing these rare genetics back to Europe and preserving their distinctive qualities required considerable effort. The feminised hybrid available today is only two generations removed from its wild ancestors, offering growers access to Bhutanese cannabis genetics that are otherwise extremely difficult to find.
In its native habitat, the Paro landrace adapted to extended dry spells, monsoon rains, strong winds and cold Himalayan winters. Purple Paro Valley has inherited much of this extraordinary resilience and can cope with low temperatures better than most modern cannabis strains. Mold resistance is exceptionally high, making PPV particularly valuable in northern regions and areas where humidity and unreliable autumn weather threaten the harvest.
Purple Paro Valley is strictly an outdoor strain. These genetics are adapted to natural sunlight and will not thrive under artificial light. Outdoors, however, PPV requires remarkably little maintenance and is nutrient-efficient. This makes it especially attractive for guerrilla cultivation and difficult locations where regular plant care is not possible.
The plants retain some of the natural diversity of their landrace ancestry. Around 75% develop the striking purple phenotype, with long internodes and a flexible, willowy structure. The green phenotype stays shorter, finishes earlier and produces more compact buds. This diversity can actually be an advantage outdoors, where different plant types may respond differently to changing environmental conditions.
The purple phenotype needs more room to stretch, particularly in containers. Late planting and pruning are useful when a moderate size is required, and PPV responds well to LST. Removing the lower shoots simplifies plant care and helps strengthen the upper branches. Hybridising the original landrace improved yield, and allowing PPV to develop into a large, multi-branch plant can increase production further.
For northern growers, Purple Paro Valley can serve as a valuable back-up strain alongside higher-yielding varieties such as Mandala #1. In particularly difficult locations or exceptionally bad seasons, its cold and mold resistance may make the difference between bringing home a harvest and losing the crop. The strain can be cultivated outdoors up to approximately 56°N.
The aroma reflects the exotic origin of these genetics. Most plants develop a delicious spicy green-lime fragrance inherited from the Paro landrace. One special expression stands apart: our “Candy Girl”, which smells remarkably like sugary candy. Crumbling the dried buds can release sweet mint with a touch of hazelnut, while the green phenotype tends toward lavender and some purple plants develop notes reminiscent of black tea. The smoke retains a fresh, minty aftertaste. PPV hash oil takes yet another direction with a fresh, sweet and balsamic aroma reminiscent of Himalayan cedar wood.
The high is predominantly deeply relaxing and can develop into full couch-lock. Purple Paro Valley is especially suited to winding down at the end of the day and preparing for sleep. From its wild Himalayan origins to its unusual colors, aromas and remarkable survival skills, PPV remains one of the most distinctive landrace projects in our collection.

Give the seed embryo the best chance to emerge from its shell. If you grow organically, investing in quality seedling soil is one of the simplest ways to get your plants off to a healthy start. We have seen many germination problems caused by peat pellets and Jiffy tabs, where the acidic pH can interfere with germination. Coco coir bricks and other compressed growing blocks can also result in poor germination rates.
There is no need to soak our seeds or use other pre-germination methods. We recommend planting them directly into seedling soil. We cannot accept responsibility for germination results when seeds are soaked in water or germinated in paper tissues.
WARNING: Do NOT lower the pH of your water with acids such as “pH-Down” products containing nitric or phosphoric acid. These can be fatal to young seedlings when growing in soil. We have used inexpensive vinegar to lower the pH of our water for 35 years. It is non-toxic and harmless to the plants when used correctly.

PPV started turning purple end of August, was partially harvested on September 7th as we are going into a wet period. Very sturdy, never complains, earned her name. Great smell and potency. I always have some plants in my garden! 2026 I will top it.

Vielen lieben Dank für dein feedback! 😊 PPV ist tatsächlich nur für draussen gedacht, aber sie hat sich erstaunlich gut entwickelt unter deiner 150W LED. Die rötliche bis intensiv purpur Färbung ist meistens nur an den Blüten, während die Blätter ein helles grün beibehalten. Deine Pflanze hat auch etwas Farbe bekommen in den buds. Wir wünschen viel Genuss mit der Ernte (PS: ein Konzentrat wie BHO, rosin, usw. ist besonders fein bei dieser Sorte). 🙂

Now in flowerday 24, outdoor. The growth turned out awesome. I call her the "untopped topped". She built 2 main branches. Stigmas already starting to turn pinkish.

Growing in Michigan can be humbling. Night time fog during the summer and heavy rains on your maturing buds in the fall. I have finally wised up and now use Mandalas outdoor guide. PPV gives large quantities of mildew free buds that work great to control pain. Highly recommend.

Beautiful exotic plant, purple colas with green fan leaves. Sweet smell reminiscent of vanilla maybe. Nice balanced high on the sedative side but not particularly memorable.

Growing one of these Beautis on the Balcony @53° in the north. I had start issues but shes a Fighter! :) I'm very ecxited for Flower and the light Sativa High. Until yet no signs of hermaphrodite or something, and the seed has good strength in start growing

Only started 1 PPV so far because of limited space in grow spot and other Mandala strains on the go too but so far so good! The seedling came up after just a couple of day's and looks good. Unfortunately I put it a little too close to my grow light during it's first few days of life (noob mistake) but it's recovering quickly and hasn't slowed it's growing speed as far as I can tell. Can't wait to try its flower when it grows up.

Grew a purple pheno at 37N in a 10 gallon pot. She jumped up to 7' tall with long, lanky branches by midsummer. I had no issues with mold or pests the whole season. The flowers were a stunning purple and blue amid a backdrop of light green leaves with an aroma of candied limes and a floral musk. High is relaxing and adds a sort of weightlessness to the body, but this plant is the most visually augmenting strain I have tried. My eyes tell me I am on a half eighth of mushrooms, but my mind and body are clear and relaxed.

This variety has been a consistent performer outdoors at 50 North since it's release some years ago. You will need to use quite a few sativa training techniques or you will have to grab a ladder for your harvest! As mentioned by the other reviewer here there are basically two types that show up, purple or green. I find the green one to always be the fence breaker ;), she has crazy compound branching and will put on huge overnight growth when conditions are right so get out your pruning shears and heavy duty twine. The purple types are often a little better behaved but will benefit from shaping and pinching out.
Although these Bhutanese beasts go to the late end of my season they can really handle some poor conditions, like our inland fogs and exposure to high winds and rain. You will need some staking and pay attention to airflow through the canopy however, no flowering cannabis plant is totally weatherproof.
All this vigour in PPV means a bit of work but your efforts are amply rewarded in flowers! No super dense nugs here but ample weights through sheer biomass. I tend to make hash from my plants and often produce something similar to some of the high quality Lebanese that used to get around a few decades back, a wonderful treat that keeps me smiling through the year.
Highly recommended variety for anyone who has a less than perfect climate, one or two of these make a beautiful addition to any outdoor garden.

Purple Paro Valley (PPV) this is an odd duck. First of all note the elevation it grows at in Bhutan. If it grows there it can grow anywhere were my thoughts. From my grow 3 years ago, I had 2 distinct pheno types; one producing small purple buds, the other, well tell ya bout that in a moment.
Both phenos have long internodes and are defiantly "sativas". The girl with the purple buds had bright purple stems as well. The reason the buds were small was do to my tyro efforts as a grower at the time. The buds were a trimmers delight. The Other gal was another story. First off let me say when you grow PPV by all means take the advise and remove the lower branches. This female was very stretchy in the internodes as well, and had deep purple stems like the other. Now here is the kicker. (Disclaimer: This is NOT a hippie story, and I promise you it is a factual account, skepticism gladly appreciated). When mature at the end of September after being started in a makeshift greenhouse around tie ides of March, the finished plant was 6 feet tall and 32 feet in diameter. For real. The "buds", 3.5 dried lb of them were very loose, lime green, looked like foxtails and had no bag appeal at all. It was some of the absolute best smoke we produced that season. 2 pounds were made into shatter,, and the rest was personal stash. The purple buds although small, had Great bag appeal, and had the same wonderful buzz. The claimed THC for this strain is 8.7 to 11 %? I call Bullshit on that lol.
This year i have PPV in my roster in a 300 gallon grow bag. I have passed the seeds out to friends and family and we see what we get this season. Recommended!
