From the Silk Road

Samangan Charas was decades in the making.

It started in the mid-90s with seeds gifted by a globetrotting friend who toured the Hindu Kush on his Enfield Bullet 350.

Cannabis cultivation in Samangan has a rich tradition in hashish production.

We selected the finest plants over generations, adapted them to indoor cultivation and finally feminized the line.

The result is a true Afghan hash plant with deep roots in the old Silk Road region.

A Tribute to Hash Plants

Resin is what Samangan Charas is all about.

Dense buds develop a thick coat of sparkling trichomes, backed by strong yields and excellent bag appeal.

Near harvest, luxurious colours of purple, magenta and indigo can light up the calyxes and leaf tips.

Samangan Charas (aka Silky) is our tribute to the hash-plant tradition, shaped by the rugged conditions of highland fields and selected for resin, yield and balanced effects.

This line expresses the classic traits associated with northern Afghan cultivation: dense buds, generous trichome coverage and a calm, steady Indica character that never feels excessive or mind-numbing.

This was one of our longest breeding projects. It started in the mid-90s after we were gifted seeds by a good friend and globetrotter who toured the Himalayas on his Enfield Bullet 350.

Over the following decades, it was an on-and-off project while we continued selecting the finest specimens, adapting them to indoor lighting and stabilizing desirable traits.

Eventually, we succeeded in feminizing the strain so that growers with limited space can also enjoy this true hash plant.

Samangan Province lies in northern Afghanistan near the historic Silk Road, along the foothills of the Hindu Kush and the plains bordering Balkh. The region has a cold semi-arid climate with sharp day/night temperature fluctuations throughout the growing season. Traditional cannabis developed under these open-field conditions, with long hours of direct sunlight and a relatively short autumn.

Northern Afghanistan, particularly the regions around Balkh and Samangan, has long been associated with hashish production, with farmers historically selecting plants for abundant trichome production and structural strength.

The plants are beginner-friendly and develop a sturdy, upright structure with a large main bud and excellent flowering on the lateral branches. Internodes are moderately spaced and cultivation in organic soil is very straightforward.

Samangan Charas performs equally well under white LED or HPS lamps. For best results, we recommend a 200W LED or 400–600W HPS setup. The strain has not been tested under low-light conditions.

Outdoors, this Indica develops a classic Christmas-tree shape, allowing good airflow and light penetration. A warm, hot, dry or Mediterranean climate is best if you don't have a greenhouse.

Resin production is a defining feature of Samangan Charas.

The buds develop a thick, even layer of sparkling trichomes, making the strain a fine choice for commercial production and extraction.

As harvest approaches, the calyxes and leaf tips can turn purple, magenta and indigo, giving the buds a luxurious touch and excellent bag appeal.

The aroma is classic: earthy, resinous notes layered with dry pine, subtle spice and a clean herbal finish. After curing, the profile deepens into a smooth blend of forest resin and warm hash tones.

Samangan Charas sits a little differently from some of the heavier Afghan landraces.

The effect is relaxing and calming without becoming overly sedating. You still feel clear enough to have a conversation, listen to music or stay present without sinking into a sleepy haze.

It’s a soothing Indica high that unwinds the body without completely shutting you down. Great for melting away stress, enjoying lazy afternoons and gliding into a chilled evening!

Samangan Charas offers:

  • anxiety relief
  • stress relief
  • mild body relaxation

Our organic cannabis seeds are fresh, fully ripened and handcrafted. Each batch is pre-tested for 100% germination and can be easily germinated directly in quality seedling soil.

In Europe, Compo Sana Seedling Mix is an excellent choice. Popular options in North America include Burpee Seed Starting Mix, Pro-Mix Organic Seed Starting Mix and Fox Farm Light Warrior Seed Starter.

Give the seed embryo the best chance to emerge from its shell. If you grow organically, investing in quality seedling soil is one of the simplest ways to get your plants off to a healthy start. We have seen many germination problems caused by peat pellets and Jiffy tabs, where the acidic pH can interfere with germination. Coco coir bricks and other compressed growing blocks can also result in poor germination rates.

There is no need to soak our seeds or use other pre-germination methods. We recommend planting them directly into seedling soil. We cannot accept responsibility for germination results when seeds are soaked in water or germinated in paper tissues.

WARNING: Do NOT lower the pH of your water with acids such as “pH-Down” products containing nitric or phosphoric acid. These can be fatal to young seedlings when growing in soil. We have used inexpensive vinegar to lower the pH of our water for 35 years. It is non-toxic and harmless to the plants when used correctly.

For soil cultivation, the correct water pH is 6.2–6.5. Please consult our Water & pH Guide for more information.
